Shown in this medical courtroom animation, bacteria in the bloodstream are identified by antibodies and then destroyed by white blood cells. While taking Cytoxan, antibodies are eliminated from the blood. The elimination of antibodies allows bacteria to proliferate. This can lead to uncontrolled infection and sepsis. Systemic infection or sepsis can result in a cascade of factors that can damage the vital organs of the body. This cascade involves uncontrolled inflammation, coagulation and edema. As severe sepsis progresses, blood pressure can drop and microclotting can occur leading to reduced blood flow to the organs. Eventually, this progressive interuption of blood flow can lead to widespread organ failure and even death.
